BT boosts ScottishPower’s grid connection

UK telecoms operator BT has signed an agreement with ScottishPower to boost connectivity to the company’s network of wind farms and offices as well as its hard-to-reach rural green energy sites.

As part of the deal, BT will help ScottishPower increase its capacity to supply greener power to facilitate the UK’s progress towards net zero.

The BT connection will help ScottishPower’s operational technology at its wind farms, allowing controllers to monitor areas such as turbine temperature, operating efficiency and the amount of electricity produced by the site.

BT says it buys 100% of its energy from renewable resources, including Scottish wind farms, as part of its sustainability commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

“We understand critical national services and, like ScottishPower, we also want to fuel Scotland’s green economic growth. We are therefore delighted that ScottishPower has placed their trust in us and awarded us this multi-million pound contract as the supplier of choice to run their national infrastructure,” said Alan Lees, Commercial Director for BT Scotland.

“As we increase our production of renewable energy, investing in more wind farms, battery storage and green hydrogen production facilities, IT must ensure that it supports the growth of the industry. “The company and BT are helping us achieve this by helping to future-proof the IT network,” said Allan Ferguson, ScottishPower UK’s director of infrastructure, operations and communications.
