Do this at lightning speed (well, almost)
Before you start, run an internet speed test to see what you’re working with. Tap or click here for the best free website to use. This will come in handy once you make the adjustments we recommend below. You will notice all the little changes that will make a world of difference later.
There are two easy ways to increase your speed. First, you can normalize the Receive Windows Auto Tuning Level. This feature allows your operating system to continuously monitor routing conditions such as delays in your network or applications.
It also checks your bandwidth. Basically, it helps your operating system configure network connections to make performance as good as possible. You’ll want to search for it and see what setting it’s enabled for. It can be activated in several modes, but you will want to set it to “Normal”.
How to Set Windows Auto Adjustment Level to Normal
Be prepared to get into the weeds a bit. First, you’ll want to navigate to your Windows button and type ordered in the search bar. Select the Command Prompt which appears. Your screen will look like this:
A new window will appear. Copy and paste this command: netsh int tcp show global. Hit enter and you will see your current level.
Your screen will look like the example below. Note that the automatic adjustment level is listed as normal. For example:
When the Windows automatic adjustment level is set to normal, it means that your computer is already in an optimal adjustment. Maybe your computer shows a different result. He can say Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level: Disabled, very restricted, limit or experimental.
If it doesn’t say Normal, you need to change it
Luckily, you can fix this problem in less than a minute. Simply copy and paste this into the command prompt: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal. Once you press Enter, you should close all open applications. Restart your computer to start seeing the changes.
Then you will want to adjust this other feature
The second way to increase your speed is to modify a feature called Windows scaling heuristics. It is designed to adjust data transfers to be optimal for network conditions.
Once you are in the command promptcopy and paste netsh int tcp display heuristic in the command line. Once you hit enter, see the Windows scaling heuristic double. This will tell you if it is enabled or disabled.
For example, mine was disabled:
If you’re like me, and Windows scaling heuristics was disabled, then you are good to go. When this feature is disabled and the Receive Windows Auto Tuning Level is set to normal, then you are using ExpressVPN’s optimal settings.
But if your Windows Scaling heuristic setting is enabled, it’s not optimal
Follow these steps to disable it:
- If the Windows Scaling heuristic setting is enabled, copy netsh int tcp set heuristic disabled
- Paste it in command prompt
- Hurry Walk in. Now it’s off
Restart your computer to start the changes. Now that you’ve made both adjustments, go back to that internet speed test from before to spot the differences.
However, you may not immediately notice the changes. Be patient and see if your system works differently depending on the network you are using. Maybe you see the same speeds at home, but it could be faster at work, for example.
